This new online course provides in-depth training on how to solve challenges in aquatic ecosystems in combination with classical hydrodynamic
modelling

Are you a professional or researcher in the fields of water quality modelling, ecosystem modelling and / or biogeochemical modelling? Do you have a basic knowledge of water quality / environmental issues and experience using MIKE 21 FM HD and / or MIKE 3 FM HD modelling software or similar?

Are you prepared to allocate a minimum of two hours of self-study each week as well as commit to five 2-hour online sessions?

If yes, you can benefit from this instructor-facilitated, online course. You’ll learn the fundamentals of water quality modelling, typical applications and how to setup and run MIKE ECO Lab models (beginner level) and design and build user defined models (advanced level). You will also be equipped to use MIKE ECO Lab in combination with MIKE 21/3 FM.

DHI has added extra course materials offering you the opportunity to invest an extra 1-2 hours of self-study per session to master the software.

This online course is divided into five sessions starting on

2 June 2020 – Session 2 (beginners’): Ecosystem modelling
MIKE ECO lab templates, model selection, data input, conversion of monitoring data to model parameters, model calibration

9 June 2020 – Session 3 (advanced): My first MIKE ECO Lab model
Goodness-of-fit, linkages to hydrodynamic models, build-in functions, model components

16 June 2020 – Session 4 (advanced): Increasing complexity
Schematic models, coupled differential equations, NPZD models

1 online session on practical information + 4 online training sessions

= 5 online sessions

Anders Chr. Erichsen
(trainer)

Anders has a background in the ecological modelling of fresh water systems and the marine environment.

He has extensive expertise in 2D & 3D hydrodynamic and environmental challenges including pycnocline modelling, algae blooms and oxygen depletion. He is currently on a project that features real-time modelling, forecasting and research utilising the 3D ecological model developed for the Danish waters. Anders is also responsible for the development and evaluation of early warning systems for bathing water quality.

Rachel Wong Ka Yee

Rachel’s background is in ecological modelling for marine environments (coastal and aquaculture) including modelling of chemical discharge and farm deposition.

Rachel offers expertise in the application of oil spill modelling for response planning purposes as well as dispersion modelling in near field and far field study.

Trine Cecilie Larsen
(trainer)

Trine has qualifications in hydrodynamic and ecological modelling of both marine and freshwater environments.

She has expertise in modelling the aquatic environment for management purposes including EIAs, local planning and supporting the design process. Trine has experience in using MIKE21 and MIKE3 as the basis for MIKE Eco Lab and ABM Lab and is also an experienced user of Delft3D FM and DelWAQ.

MIKE ECO Lab

Use predefined templates

With MIKE ECO Lab, you simply define the process using built-in standard templates for Eutrophication, Water Quality and Heavy Metal as a basis. This enables you to transform any aquatic ecosystem into a reliable numerical model for accurate predictions. You may also start from a blank template making use of the wide range of libraries of constants and functions, which makes it easy to generate and edit your own templates.

Create new model concepts

The user has easy access to the formulation of the biological, chemical and settling processes and the option of viewing, modifying, or creating the formulation of the processes and to introduce new state variables to simulate. It is therefore possible to create completely new model concepts containing the necessary causal relations to describe the specific phenomena in question.

Couple to other software

MIKE ECO Lab integrates seamlessly with the MIKE suite of flow simulation models covering all aspects - ranging from 1D, 2D and 3D free surface modelling to integrated hydrology: MIKE HYDRO River (1D), MIKE 21 (2D), MIKE 3 (3D), MIKE SHE (Hydrology) and MIKE URBAN+ (1D).
