This five-module online course will address basic hydrology, model conceptualisation, coupling processes, model setup, model calibration and results analysis. MIKE SHE is tightly integrated with MIKE HYDRO River and the course includes a basic introduction to this.

Course details and important dates

This instructor-led online course is divided into five consecutive modules of two hours each, supplemented by a one-hour course introduction. The training takes place on Thursdays from 08:00-10:00 (UTC) for six consecutive weeks. The course dates are 5 November, 12 November, 19 November, 26 November, 3 December and 10 December 2020.

Module One: Integrated hydrology and hydrological modelling using MIKE SHE
Integrated hydrology, overview of approach, presentation of MIKE SHE and associated tools, learning how to build a model, exercise in setting up a flow model

19 November, Thursday
Module Two: MIKE SHE flow modules

Presentation of MIKE SHE modules, concepts, methods and input parameters, learning how to set up model scenarios, exercise in assessing the impacts of groundwater abstraction

26 November, Thursday
Module Three: Setting up a MIKE HYDRO River model and coupling with MIKE SHE

MIKE Hydro River, recommendations for coupling with MIKE SHE, working with structures, representation of floodplains, tips and tricks for stabilising models, exercise

3 December, Thursday
Module Four: Model calibration and sensitivity analysis 
Definition of calibration, model calibration approaches, common difficulties, presentation of Autocal, simple examples and exercises using Autocal

10 December, Thursday
Module Five: Natural catchment management using MIKE SHE
Natural catchment management approaches for managing flood risk and drought, managing climate change, common measures, benefit of integrated modelling, presentations of real-life examples, exercise in running scenarios

Your trainer

Birgitte von Christierson

Birgitte is a Chief Engineer at DHI’s Water Resources Department and forms part of the global support team for MIKE SHE. She is an experienced senior hydrologist/hydrogeologist modeller with more than 20 years of experience in integrated surface water and groundwater resources management. Birgitte has extensive experience in hydrological modelling and groundwater modelling using various software packages. Her experiences include climate data analysis, assessment of the impacts of droughts/climate change on water resources and impacts of wetland restoration on water quality. Birgitte has managed a wide range of projects including groundwater modelling, climate change and drought management. An authorised DHI trainer, Birgitte has been teaching groundwater modelling and integrated modelling to professionals worldwide.
