Course modules and dates

This instructor-led online course is divided into five consecutive modules of two hours each, supplemented by a one-hour course introduction.

The training takes place on Tuesdays from 14:00-16:00 (UTC) for six consecutive weeks. The course dates are 26 October, 02 November, 09 November, 16 November, 23 November and 30 November 2021.

Topics: Course materials and learning methodology, homework requirements, deadlines, introduction to Zoom meeting software
Topics: Integrated hydrology, overview of approach, presentation of MIKE SHE and associated tools, learning how to build a model, exercise in setting up a flow model
Topics: Presentation of MIKE SHE modules, concepts, methods and input parameters, learning how to set up model scenarios, exercise in assessing the impacts of groundwater abstraction
MIKE Hydro River, recommendations for coupling with MIKE SHE, working with structures, representation of floodplains, tips and tricks for stabilising models, exercise
Definition of calibration, model calibration approaches, common difficulties, presentation of Autocal, simple examples and exercises using Autocal
Natural catchment management approaches for managing flood risk and drought, managing climate change, common measures, benefit of integrated modelling, presentations of real-life examples, exercise in running scenarios

This five-module online course will address basic hydrology, model conceptualisation, coupling processes, model setup, model calibration and results analysis. Includes a basic introduction to MIKE HYDRO River.
Upon course completion, you will have the skills to set up integrated hydrological models using MIKE SHE, run simulations and review results across a variety of integrated catchment modelling projects.

Birgitte von Christierson

MSc, Civil Engineering,
Technical University of Denmark

Birgitte is a Chief Engineer at DHI’s Water Resources Department and forms part of the global support team for MIKE SHE. She is a senior hydrologist/hydrogeologist modeller with more than 20 years of experience in integrated surface water and groundwater resources management. Her expertise includes climate data analysis, as well as climate change and wetland restoration impact assessments. An authorised DHI trainer, Birgitte has been teaching groundwater modelling and integrated modelling to professionals worldwide.
